California is ‘officially’ cold!

So I have been going on about it getting colder for a few weeks now but then it seems as soon as I say it the sun comes out and we have a little heatwave – not that I am complaining about that but it can get confusing when getting dressed!

However yesterday was the first time since early February that I had to put the heating on in the house – so it is ‘official’ IT’S COLD in the BAY AREA!!

I for one am looking forward to legwarmers, sweater dresses, long flat boots, chunky cardigans, layers and enjoying healthy hot meals!! YAY 🙂

Sweet Chili Soup Recipe Made EASY

Sweet Chili Soup, similar to Garden Fresh

One of our families favorite soups is served at the Garden Fresh restaurants in the Bay Area, California.

Currently Garden Fresh, serving Chinese Vegan Cuisine, has two restaurant locations:

  • Palo Alto, 460 Ramona Street, (650) 462-9298
  • Mountain View, 1245 West El Camino, (650) 254-1688

A few nights ago my husband and I were craving some of their warming soup however as we were to tired to go out I decided to attempt making it myself at home.

I would like to point out I do not know the Garden Fresh ‘Hot and Sour’ soup recipe and my version tastes slightly more sweet over sour as it must have different ingredients.

However I did pretty good and I don’t just say that myself, even though I do like to toot my own horn on occasion, my husband was very impressed and he does not impress easily! 🙂

This recipe has simple steps, is easy to make and may just end up being your go-to soup when you need warming up quickly this season.

Serves: 1 large or 2 small Chinese soup bowls


  • 1/2 lb extra firm tofu, squeezed and drained of excess water. 1/4 lb tofu thinly sliced into bite sized pieces and 1/4 lb cut into small cubes.
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of corn starch
  • 8 oz vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar, I used Pure Cane Organic Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon of chili garlic sauce
  • 4 oz plus 3 teaspoons of water


  1. In a small bowl mix together the cornstarch with the 3 tablespoons of water.
  2. Stir in the vegetable broth and mix until cornstarch has been blended in.
  3. Heat the cornstarch/broth mixture in a saucepan over a medium heat and get it to boiling point. Stir occasionally to prevent the mixture sticking to the saucepan.
  4. Add all the tofu, apple cider vinegar, sugar, lemon juice, soy sauce, and chili garlic sauce. Cook over a medium heat. Stir occasionally letting the soup get to a boiling point and then simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Add the 4 oz of room temperature water, stir and let it reach boiling point – this should take 3 minutes.

Serve and taste a soup full of flavor!

If you do get the chance to eat at one of the Garden Fresh restaurant locations, and you must try as the food is delicious and the service always friendly, as well as the Hot and Sour soup I recommend the following two dishes:

  • General’s Veggie Chicken; crispy-fried soy chicken, sautéed with bell peppers and carrots in a spicy sweet and sour sauce.
  • Scallion Pancakes with Carrot Sticks; small fried pancakes topped with a mouth watering sauce. I actually wanted to lick the plate, the sauce was SO good.

My mouth is watering just thinking of the food at Garden Fresh!
